Why We Should Vote in November 2018
October 6, 2018
I texted most of the day today for a couple orgs to get people out to vote. Don't ask me how many texts I sent. I have no clue other than it was several thousand. Why mention this? I kept hearing misconceptions about the vote coming up, how there are people out there who actually believe their vote doesn't count, that the electoral college will negate it. So I did spend some time with these people, trying to educate them about the truth of the matter. I found it necessary to do so or these folks would be playing into the hands of the GOP. That's what not voting does. We've already seen how this works.
Part of my explanation boiled down to this. Those who believe this don’t understand two things: The electoral college comes into play for presidential elections only. I'm sure they're thinking of the last presidential election in 2016. So I informed them that 44.37% (102,731,399) did NOT vote at all. THIS is what put the current guy in the White House.
I asked that they do their research. Not voting is a vote for the GOP. Is that what they really want? I sure as hell don't.
I understand their anger. That used to be me when GW Bush ran against Gore in 2000. Yes, I thought the vote was fixed. Irregularities did appear in Florida. It was because of this election that I didn't vote at all for a couple of years. I was thinking like these people I came into contact with today, that my vote didn't matter. But then I realized what I was really doing, giving the GOP my vote through my inaction, so I began to vote again. I realized that if I didn't express my opinion through the ballot box that I had no room to say a word about what Congress or the White House has done that angers me, that puts us all at risk, especially like is happening now.
It's still up to you whether you vote or not. But can we really continue to deal with the destruction that has been on a fast track since that orange buffoon took the oath of office and chose his swamp?
