Tomorrow is a call-in day. If you live in the US, please take part, and perhaps tweet about your action if you have a Twitter account. Here's all the information you need:
WHAT: Save the EPA Call In Day! Fossil fuel companies like Exxon can’t be trusted to act responsibly. We’ve seen it time and time again -- from Exxon Valdez to Deepwater Horizon. These companies will do anything they can to get out of cleaning up their messes.
We need the EPA to keep these companies in check: to monitor compliance, issue fines, order cleanups, and take polluters to court.
Right now, Congress is debating whether to slash the EPA’s budget by more than 30%. We need Congress to stand up for the EPA and our communities!
Make a quick call into Rep. XXX’s office TODAY and urge him/her to stand up for the EPA! Do the same for your Senators as well. A toll free number for Congress to contact both your Rep.'s and Senators' Washington D.C. office is 1-844-USA-0234, or you can use this number to contact them: (201)224-3121. Call their local offices too!
When you call, you may get an answering machine, but you’ll likely talk to one of the constituent services representatives. Make sure to give them your name and where you are calling from. Tell them that you are a voter and you want Rep. XXX or Senator XXX to stand up for our clean air and our clean water, and protect the EPA. Any budget cut, big or small, would be detrimental to our environment. That’s why you want them to vote against any measures that would threaten the EPA’s budget. You might also want to add in some reason why you personally care about the EPA! You should feel free add that in!

Event Name: YOUR REPRESENTATIVE and SENATORS: Save the EPA!
WHEN: September 22nd (all day)
WHERE: Your Phone!

Call in day sample phone script:
Hi my name is [NAME] and I’m a voter calling from [WHERE YOU’RE FROM]. As a constituent I’m calling on Rep. XXX to stand up for our clean air and our clean water, and protect the EPA. Any budget cut, big or small, would be detrimental to our local environment. In our state, cutting the EPA’s budget would paralyze our ability to address [INSERT LOCAL ISSUE, ex: local superfund site or pollution problem, vulnerable community, natural area in your region]. That’s why I want Rep. XXX to vote against any measures that would threaten the EPA’s budget.
Talking points:
Local impacts
- Over a third of the EPA’s current funding is passed directly to state environmental agencies. This means our [INSERT your state] environmental protection agency would lose significant funding.
- We won’t be able to protect our precious natural places like [INSERT protected natural area in your region] from environmental destruction.
- The Trump budget would severely cut the enforcement of our environmental laws, likely enabling polluters who illegally poison our air and water to evade responsibility.
Sample Asks
Below are specific asks catered to your Senators’ or member of Congress’s specific stance on environmental issues.
If swing (on the fence about if they will reject the budget):
- Given your commitment to [INSERT issue member is passion about ex: public health, clean air and water] will you commit to rejecting any budget that guts the Environmental Protection Agency?
If champion (openly plans to vote to reject the budget):
- Given that you’re a strong advocate for environmental protection, will you commit to vote against any cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget?
- If YES: Thanks for being a strong advocate for environmental protection! Will you commit to being an environmental champion in Congress and do everything you can to make sure your colleagues don’t compromise or try to make backdoor deals that cut the EPA’s budget or fund fossil fuel projects on our public lands?
If opposition (openly plans to vote for the budget):
- How can you prioritize tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans above protecting our water and air? Will you commit to protecting our water and air by voting against any budget proposal or appropriations bill that cut funding to the Environmental Protection Agency?
Many thanks in advance for participating tomorrow, working for the coming generations. :)
PLEASE SHARE FAR AND WIDE! THANKS!
