Questions - Chapter 3 "Reading" - Walden

This question is from another site, and is a good one: 

How much and what kind of reading do most people consider enough? How much and what kind would Thoreau think is enough, and why? Give examples.  

Something else to consider involves Thoreau's advice found in this chapter on how to approach reading, something a Duke University Reading Guide mentions.  It is an approach that is necessary for understanding and enjoying his writing:

 "To read well, that is, to read true books in a true spirit, is a noble exercise, and one that will task the reader more than any exercise which the customs of the day esteem.  It requires a training such as the athletes underwent, the steady intention almost of the whole life to this object.  Books must be read as deliberately and reservedly as they were written" (para. 3 89-90).  


 Here are a couple others you might want to address Friday:
  1. What does the image of the veil mean?
  2. How can books help us "scale heaven at last"?
  3. What puns and analogies can be found in the last paragraph?  What is their effect?

Of course the village idiot is blaming the Dems for this shutdown when in fact it’s him and his chicken party is what is responsible, always has been. IMO he’s trying to divert attention from this with what is happening in the Middle East. If this corrupt regime is not placing back pay now on the GOP in Congress, he’s looking to switch responsibility to them. Guess what, fool. It doesn’t work that way. We KNOW who’s responsible who is really incapable of governing. Remember this always. Post it somewhere so you remember who is responsible for this stuff we’re all going through with the shutdown: “They’ve worked so hard to have us forget about the Epstein files and what they contain [I haven’t so I doubt it’s working elsewhere]. This stands out: " we are living in the 'against stupidity we have no defense' era.” What would happen if we had PMQs. I miss those like Thatcher. The examples given remind us of what democracy looks like. IMO this is factual: " Most of our politicians, regardless of party, couldn’t handle the intellectual preparation that PMQs requires.” I most definitely agree with this, and I doubt I’m the only one who believes this: " Imagine Convicted Felon Trump having to weekly defend the appropriateness … of EVERYTHING HE IS DOING.
